This rather puts me in mind of a letter written to Miss Manners. I've been rereading her book on correct behavior (and if anyone wants a laugh, they should too). A reader asked if one had to simply say "sit" when addressing one's dog as it sounded too much like something a dictator would say.
Miss Manners said that in that case, even please sit would be too harsh and one should simply say, "oh, please do sit down and make yourself comfortable."
I, personally, however feel that it would be a little far to ask if the dog wanted tea and biscuits.
